Commentary:
Commissioned by the City of Calgary and the Canada Lands Company (CLC), Geoff's company (T-Six Urbanists at the time) was hired as a recognized international expert in walkable, mixed use urbanism while also possessing an intimate local knowledge of the Calgary context. The original scope called for an in-depth critical assessment of the situation that would deal with both the immediate needs of CLC and longer term needs of the City and CLC . This first draft is presented here as an "unofficial" draft that was not previously released. Due to election-year pressures and it's release just prior to the adoption of Calgary's controversial new Municipal Development Plan (2009), politics demanded a rework of our mission, producing a much simpler, less provocative report aimed direct at Canada Land's more immediate needs rather than a deeper analysis of systemic institutional change. The result is presented here as the official version.
